Softball Game Synopsis

By NRC Softball Correspondent Bruce Jensen

Heckscher State Park, E. Islip, NY.- On Sunday, August 22 the second annual softball game between the NRC and the Bohemia Track Club (BTC) was played at Heckscher State Park. After losing the inaugural game of this series (14-13, 9 innings) a year ago, our Club Members were anxiously anticipating the first pitch. BTC jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning. However, this long awaited rematch would not be a disappointment, with our men and women taking charge early on. Thanks to some great pitching, timely hitting and fabulous defense the NRC took a commanding 9-2 lead after only 1 inning of play.

Our solid play continued throughout the early afternoon and when all was said and done we walked away with an impressive 21-6 victory in 7 innings as well as a 1-1 series tie.

Thanks to all Club Members who participated in making this game such a great success: Coach Fred Kraus, Asst. Coaches Walter Kueffner and Rich Teubner, the players, the fans, the photographer (Hilory Boucher Carlin) and the umpire (Bernie Carlin). And of course the Bohemia Track Club for being such great sports. We look forward to next year’s game (and picnic)!

In addition, we’d like to wish BTC Member Bob Clasen who dislocated his elbow in the 1st inning, on a diving catch in leftield, a speedy recovery. Bob was lucky that we had two of our nurses playing the game (Mona Rechner & Kevin Thompson) who were able to take over the situation until the ambulance arrived.
