The Little Cow Harbor is once again slated to kick off Long Island Track & Field Grand Prix Series for the 2006 season. This years designated charities will again be The Smithtown Guide Dog Foundation of Smithtown and The Vacation Camp for the Blind.
Due to the support and success the race has enjoyed, the race has been able to benefit multiple charities in addition to the two mentioned above. The race will again look to sponsor of a guide dog which costs over $6,000 dollars. The individual who will take ownership of our 2005 sponsored guide dog will have all the supporters and runners of this race to thank for their gift of sight and independence. The race will also look to be able to send a blind child to camp in the summer of 2006.
To date, TWO of our race sponsored dogs, Nils and Dude have graduated to Guide Dog status and were placed with their new, proud and happy owners in late 2004. Nils now works and lives in Manalapan New Jersey while Dude has relocated to the vacation land of Massachusetts, Cape Cod. I was personally on hand to see Dudes graduation with his new owner and it was very gratifying to see the direct results and fruits of our labor all in part to the Little Cow Harbor 4-Mile Run. With the net proceeds of the 2005 event we were once again fortunate enough to be able to sponsor the training of another guide dog of the future. Our 2005 dog named Alure was born on November 22, 2005 and with some good fortune will also graduate to full guide dog status. We will keep you posted on Alures progress, as the process take almost 2 years to complete.
