The
1999 TFIR was one of the smaller TFIRs in recent years, probably due to
temperatures expected to be in the 90s with oppressing humidity. Still,
this didn't stop better than 50 TFIR runners from having a great day running
the towns and beaches of Fire Island. Surprisingly, more runners this
year opted for the full TFIR (about 23 miles) than for the shorter TFIR
distances. The "full" runners were blessed with a low tide and
a decent breeze that at least made the first part of the run along the
National Park Seashore bearable. Other runners joined the crew along the
way at Watch Hill, The Pines, Sailors Haven and Ocean Beach. The lunch
stop at Bocce Beach Pub in Ocean Beach was well appreciated, as the air
conditioning was on at full blast. TFIR transportation organizer Kevin
Thompson showed his appreciation for this with his traditional short nap
in the corner on the Pub's floor. As usual, the celebration at the end
of the run was in "The Out" pub in Kismet. Even though the was
really hot (no air conditioning), the TFIR crew celebrated at full blast
and danced the afternoon away to the sound's of band The Smokin' Guns. |
