BLIZZARD
OF 2003 CANCELS THIS YEAR'S EVENT
(Thursday 2/20/2003) After exploring all possible
alternatives, we finally came to the painful decision that we have to
cancel this years race. We discussed with the Park Supervisor the possibility
of using the old course, which ran up to the golf course, discussed other
modified courses, and unfortunately was not able to come up with a safe
alternative for this weekend.
It seemed like the mid-winter race that has never been cancelled in 23
consecutive years was invincible. As many of you may recall, this race
has been run in some of the worst winter weather conditions imaginable,
including snow, bitter cold winds and freezing rain. One year Sunken Meadow
was officially closed by the Park Police due to a snow storm, yet they
let us crazy runners in hold the race. We had about ten teams and had,
if I must say, a great time! This year the sheer quantity of snow did
us in. The Park maintenance crew just did not have the assets to perform
a miracle in the 5 days after a snowfall of nearly 2 feet.
Options for rescheduling the race were also discussed, but the dates that
the Park would be available conflicted with several other running events
like the Little Cow Harbor Race, GLIRC X/C Relay, Kings Park 15K and others.
At this point in time we do not see a reschedule option. See you next
year for the race's 25th anniversary.
